Arba Minch is a town located in the south of Ethiopia. It is situated between two lakes, Lake Abaya in the north and Lake Chamo in the south. A chain of hills, named "God's Bridge", separates the two lakes.

Nicola Borgmann, architect and director of the Architekturgalerie München e.V., initiated the design-build project Chamo Primary School, which was implemented in cooperation with Arba Minch University. Four new classrooms, toilets and a cistern for clean drinking water were designed for the 8-class state school with 2000 pupils. The project was realised with the students of the architecture faculty in Arba Minch.

After the completion of the whole installation clean drinking water for the students is now flowing from 4 taps.

The rainwater from the cistern after passing the Waterflow system was tested for Salmonella, E.coli and Vibrio using CompactDry analysis plates.

Message from Nicola Borgmann: "The water is totally clean! Hurray for aqua pura! Nomen est omen! Great!"

Ethiopia, Town Mekele: School

August 2018

Mekele (in Tigrayish Mek'ele) is the capital of the Tigray region in northern Ethiopia, near the border with Eritrea, about 500 km north of the capital of Addis Ababa and has about 170 000 inhabitants.

In Ethiopia, 17,000 children die each year from diseases caused by polluted water and poor hygiene (UNICEF 2014).

The water available to the school in Mekele through the municipal water supply can not be used because of heavy pollution.

In collaboration with the organization rainbows4children, the water purification system Waterflow developed and donated by aqua pura could be installed in the school. Now bacteriologically clean drinking water flows for the students and teachers. The purified water is made from rainwater and water from a well and a well from a neighbour.
