Projects in Uganda

Uganda, Kanyogoga: Orphanage

July 2023

The association vision4ugandakids cares for orphans in Uganda. Kanyogoga is located 70 km west of the capital Kampala. The founder of the association is Harriet Suter. She grew up in Uganda and has been involved with orphans since she was 17 years old. The challenge was always to find a suitable accommodation. On average, the orphans had to move with the caregivers every two years. In 2014, a piece of land in Kanyogogo with two simple houses and a plantation was acquired.

First of all, the houses were renovated and sanitary facilities with toilets and showers were built. In 2019, the water supply was ensured by means of a newly dug well. Electricity is available from the public grid and own solar panels.

Since the water has to be stored in tanks, it is contaminated with e-coli. For this reason, a new water purification system was installed in cooperation with aqua pura.

Today, the aqua pura plant feeds the kitchen and three taps for the children with bacteria- free water.

Uganda, Kisoga: Herona Hospital now has drinking water and independent water supply

March 2022

Our partner organization Cheira arranged the contact with Herona Hospital, about 40 km from Kampala, the capital of Uganda, and with Richard Field, IMET2000 Field Officer in Uganda, our project coordinator on site.

The water situation was described this way in 2021: "We use bicycles to fetch water to be used in the operating room, during delivery and for patients. Every day we use up to 40 jerry cans of water, and it is very difficult for the midwives to clean the delivery room without water. Before, in the surgical camp with Cheira, we did not have water in the well and we did not want surgeries to be performed. We had to call a water tanker truck that had to travel 80 km to the hospital in Herona."

A partner organization of aqua pura, the Wulf Stiftung, financed the extension of the borehole. This deepened well now pumps water into the two tanks on the roof of the hospital and one above the borehole, which in turn are connected to the various functioning toilets and washing points of the house. By installing an aqua pura waterflow system, up to 500 liters of drinking water can be additionally treated every hour from the stored water. Clean drinking water now flows from special drinking water taps in the hospital, making the purchase of expensive bottled water redundant.

Two of the conditions defined by Cheira for carrying out further surgical missions at Herona Hospital:

- Water management with working lavabos and a few places to get drinking water.
- Pipeline rehabilitation in the building so that water can flow everywhere were fulfilled through this project.

Richard Field: "Herona is now completely powered by solar energy, so the cost of the purification system is zero. Thank you very much"

Uganda, Kitovu: Bacteria-free water for hospital

March 2022

Kitovu Hospital is located 130 kilometers south-west of Kampala, the capital of Uganda. Florian Kistler from the partner organization Tusiima Nawanyago completed an internship on site as a future doctor. However, he was not only interested in medical issues, but also in the quality of the drinking water in the hospital. The analysis plates provided by aqua pura revealed the presence of bacteria. According to his further explanations, water pipes were unsuitable for bacteria-free drinking water.

The solution proposed by aqua pura was therefore to continue using the existing pipelines for service water and to install a new supply system for drinking water. A total of 160 meters of new piping was laid for the water connections in the surgery, infirmary, maternity clinic and waiting room departments.

The Waterflow system now supplies 500 liters of bacteria-free water per hour for hospital staff, patients and visitors, a total of 150 to 200 people per day. According to Florian Kistler, there is no longer any need for firewood for boiling water or money for expensive bottled water.

Uganda, Nawanyago: Health Center III

December 2018

Clean drinking water for the Nawanyago Health Center III, thanks to the associations Tusiima Nawanyago and aqua pura.

Nawanyago is located in eastern Uganda in the kingdom of Busoga, one of the five great kingdoms in present day Uganda. The local tribe, the Musoga, speaks the local language Lusoga. The distance to the capital Kampala is about 120 km.

The hospital currently has 29 beds in the various wards: gynecology, children, women and men. Nawanyago currently employs 10 medically trained people, such as a doctor, midwives and nurses, and 9 supporting staff, accounting, cashiers, etc. The most prevalent diseases at the Nawanyago Health Center are:

  1. malaria
  2. typhoid
  3. diarrhea
  4. eye diseases
  5. anemia
  6. worm infestation,
  7. dysentery,
  8. malnutrition,
  9. pneumonia
  10. sand worms
Most of these are due to poor hygiene and poor sanitation in the community. On average, there are 2 births a day.

Although there is a lot of precipitation in Nawanyago on an annual average, there is no way to safely collect and store the precious water hygienically.

aqua pura donated a Waterflow system and Tusiima Nawanyago donated 3 water tanks (10,000 liters each of rainwater), new rain gutters for the hospital, the water pipe system and the solar system for the 24-hour operation of the Waterflow system. There are now enough water points in the hospital's main wing (the county hall, the lab, the treatment rooms) with running, germ-free water, which is a huge progress for the small hospital.

Uganda, Kisoro: District Hospital

April 2015

Georg Bednorz and his wife Mecki, members of aqua pura, have implemented their two drinking water projects in Uganda, this with full commitment in favour of the patients of the Kisoro District Hospital and the orphanage and school in Nkuringo.

Kisoro is a city in south-western Uganda at the foot of the Virunga volcanoes near the border with Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo with about 11,328 inhabitants. It is the capital of the district of the same name Kisoro.

The drinking water problem in this area is very large for the poor population. Diarrhoeal diseases are the order of the day and can only be eliminated with clean drinking water and hygiene education.

Kisoro, with its approximately eleven thousand inhabitants, is a town in the South West of Uganda, situated at the foot of the Virunga volcanoes and near the border of Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. It is the capital of the Kisoro District.

Uganda, Nkuringo: Orphanage with school

April 2015

The Nkuringo orphanage with school is situated in the hills, about 30 km from Kisoro in the direction to the Congo. 100 half and full orphans live in a house donated by Georg Bednorz. For the children, the teachers and the staff, clean drinking water is made of rainwater by implementing the aqua pura system.

Uganda, Area of Kampala: Schools

January 2013

Clean drinking water flows in the Christian High and Primary School in the area of Kampala (Uganda).

The Seroma Christian High School and Gilgal Primary School society offers these two schools in the Kampala area financial and educational support, being motivated by both social and Christian convictions.

Uganda: Solar energy and water purification

In 2013 a solar energy plant, necessary for the computer, the outside lighting at night and the water pump, was installed as a hybrid with the national grid.  A few teething problems were successfully solved during the visit this year thanks to the help of an Ugandan and a Swiss engineer while a Swiss electrician dealt with the electrical system in the school. aqua pura congratulates Ruedi Schneeberger and Peter Schnyder and the local plumbers to the great work they have done for the health of the people in this part of Uganda. It is only a small drop in the ocean but an important one.
